Recently selected as one of the 10 best beaches in Central America, Las Peñitas offers 2.5 km of smooth, dark sand, wonderful sunsets, surfing, fishing, and boating. The name was derived from the unique rock formations scattered here and there along the Pacific coastline. And although this area has grown in international popularity among expats and travelers in recent years, it still maintains its small-town charm with abundant local culture, traditions, and influence.
Las Peñitas and Poneloya both have magnificent beaches, as well as estuaries that fill and empty with the tide. The island of Juan Venado is a wildlife sanctuary declared a Natural Reserve due to its great ecological richness.
Although very quiet most of the year, during holiday seasons such as Easter, Christmas, or New Year's Eve, this small beach town is a popular destination for national tourists from all over the country - as well as foreigners - and takes on more of a party atmosphere with private events and concerts that go well into early morning hours. We encourage people to book rooms early during these high-volume periods, as most hotels on the beach sell out in advance. We also want guests to know that the vacation experience during peak times will be less tranquilo.
Step outside our gate and walk the beach, play in the waves, body surf, collect sea shells, swim in the estuaries at either end of the beach, stop at the malecons and miradoras, or just sit and watch the sun set.
Estuaries at the far ends of the Las Penitas and Poneloya beaches fill and empty with the tide. When water levels are high, you can swim, play or float in the calm, shallow waters.
Near the entrance of Las Peñitas, you will find this brightly colored and well lit tourist attraction with rotunda, boardwalk, sealife sculptures, benches and public showers.
If you don't have a car, you may want to consider taking a bicycle or renting an e-bike for a tour on the road that connects the beach towns of Las Peñitas and Poneloya.
Take a boat tour of the mangroves and if you're lucky, stop at Juan Venado Island Nature Reserve to release baby turtles from the turtle sanctuary into the sea.
A local fishermen will take you out on a traditional open fishing boat, called pangas, to fish for tuna, wahoo, sailfish, mackerel, red snapper, or roosterfish.
Just down the beach from here, you can take a private surfing lesson with a local surf instructor or join one of several yoga classes.
